Show Us Your Life...SNOW Day

Kelly has asked us to share some Christmas traditions this week for "Show Us Your Life Friday". I grew up in the north with lots of snow. I remember walking to school in moon boots and snow pants, making snow angels, and driving around with kitty litter in the trunk of the car in case we got stuck. Snow is one thing I really miss now that I live in the south, so I make a tradition of decorating with it!

My snowman collection started very small. I suppose I mentioned to friends and family that I liked snowmen, because over the years my collection grew by leaps and bounds! I pack away the dishes on my dining room hutch during the holidays so I have a place to show off my jolly little snow people. I try to add a new one every year.

I have a few larger snow people in my kitchen window this year, and I even added a few furry, sparkly snowflakes to make them feel at home.

This year I have apothecary jars on my piano, and I filled my big one with fake snow and a miniature sled scene. I loved sledding when I was little! If I remember correctly, it took 40 minutes to get dressed to go outside and 1.2 minutes to ride my little silver disk sled down the hill of our cul-de-sac street, but I didn't seem to mind much. I have great memories of that little sled.

Every year the whole family helps me set up my Dickens snow village on top of our entertainment center. This year we set it up while Emma was napping. We had it all plugged in when she woke up and she was so delighted!

I hope for just enough snow each year to go out and play one time. We ALWAYS make a little snowball and put it away in tupperware in our freezer just to see how long it can last. My kids get a kick out of seeing our "real" snow in the freezer well into spring time.

I suppose my other favorite Christmas tradition is baking. There are many foods that are reminiscent of the holidays, but none so much as Christmas cookies. Each year my Mom and I make an exhaustive list of all our favorite kinds. We have a ball baking dozens and dozens of cookies and making huge platters to give away to neighbors and friends. This was last year's spread.

I pack all the cookies away in little tins, most of which I have inherited from my Mom and Grandmother, and all of which I treasure. Each one brings back memories of Christmases past, and over the years each one has held some pretty tasty treasures!

It will be fun to read about special holiday traditions, so visit Kelly's blog for more of the tour!

I think the snow in the apothecary jar worked really nice.
