Derby Days

Pinewood derby is right around the corner, so it's time for the annual car-palooza. We fire up the dremel and let the boys go to town sanding and sawing.

Every year it is my role to oversee the paint job. Every year we are 4.2 seconds into the project when I clearly recall that last year I firmly vowed to do this year's painting outside. Tonight I was especially grateful for our brand new kitchen chairs with fabric seat cushions. Because challenge is the spice of life.

Anyhoo, one boy was particularly into the planning stages this year, and gave much thought to the design of his car. He thoughtfully sifted through our tremendous collection of tiny plastic animals to select the perfect "hood ornament". I reminded him that we have been studying flight in science, and movement in general, and that a large plastic wildcat sticking up on the top of his car would create drag and cause the car not to race as fast.

"Yeah. I know. That's totally okay. I just really like building the car. I don't care anything about how fast it goes or actually winning the race. I just want a car that looks totally COOL."

Baby, I completely understand. I do believe that sweet boy subscribes to his Mama's philosophy on auto racing. Let's just go for the really cute car.

Hey, Dude. You've got one sweet ride waiting for you bright and early Saturday morning. And a big honkin' wildcat riding shotgun.

That's hilarious. My son always has to add a Lego guy to his derby car, space rocket, or boat!!

Ah! the pinewood derby. I have only one more to get through and then all four of my boys will have left cub scouts for the world of boy scouts, merit badges and campouts. I like the guy you added, nice touch

This sounds like so much fun! As the mom of a boy, I have a feeling this just might be in my future!
