What's Bugging Me

The great thing about good friends is that some relationships simply seem to transcend time. True girlfriends can go for far too long without seeing each other, and when they are reunited, it is like no time has passed. They can pick right up where they left off and get on with girlfriendhood. That's the way it has been for me this week. Marci, Sheri and I were good friends when our kiddos were tiny. Sheri moved away to North Carolina eight years ago, and Marci and I miss her terribly. She came back into town this week, so I have neglected the blog a bit to devote my free time to girlfriendhood.

Sheri hasn't changed a bit, and enjoying her gentle, carefree spirit and warm, sincere laugh has been the highlight of the past few days. Marci hosted a lunch on Sunday, and we were together yesterday and today a bit too. Just like old times. Except with a few more gray hairs. Theirs, not mine, of course! :)

(I wish!)

Tonight we met at a new place in town for a late dessert. We now have a cool frozen yogurt shop down the street. It is delicious, and immaculate, and they play Christian praise music. It was the perfect setting for Marci and I to settle in one last time with Sheri before she heads home tomorrow. I looked forward to it all day. I even styled all my gray hairs. There were self-serve yogurt machines along the wall, so we could fill our cups with all our favorite flavors, then add lots of fun toppings from the topping bar. We talked and laughed and consumed calories, just like good girlfriends do. Then, we stepped into the cool night air and bid a sad farewell. Our visit has been wonderful, but it has also reminded me how much I miss my friend! I got into my van and headed home, feeling dreamy and content. Girlfriends. Yogurt. Laughing. Reminiscing.

Half-way home, I noticed something out of the corner of my eye. While I was driving down the road, a big, black, shiny bug crawled right out from my Great Big Hairdo and made his way toward my shoulder. I thank the Lord I was the only car on the road, because I think I took up all three lanes shaking that miserable creature from my do. I have no idea where he went, which is, of course, driving me crazy. I've changed my clothes and brushed my hair seven times, but I still "feel" him. Screaming. Swerving. Creepy. Crawly.

I'll have to call Marci tomorrow and tell her about it so we can laugh. And then we'll wish Sheri was here to laugh with us too. Maybe we'll have to pick up eight years from now and laugh about it then. That's just the thing about good girlfriends.
