Happy Homecoming

We spent the day in the car, driving home from Kansas. It was hard to leave the beautiful colors and cool temperatures of the Midwest. We had a great visit, and the kids did relatively well in the car on the way home. I sat in the front seat and read a stack of quilting magazines. I love to dream about all the projects I don't have time to make right now, so instead I dog ear all the pages for things I will make "someday". I'm lucky that Buzzard likes to do the driving, because I think I get the good end of the bargain. I get to sit and read or sew, hand out snacks, and occasionally settle a minor dispute that erupts in the backseat. Threatening to take away the snacks usually settles them rather quickly.

We made it home by evening, and thanks to help from my Mom and a neighbor, our team of critters were fed and happy, and things were in order on the home front. There was only one minor blip on the radar while we were away. Somehow, the refrigerator door was slightly ajar. It must have happened the morning we left. We lost everything in the fridge. Even the biscuits exploded.

I've been meaning to clean out the fridge anyway, and have been putting it off. I was starting to wonder how old the pickles were, and if there was a statute of limitations on maraschino cherries. I have a terrible habit of opening a jar of something, using almost all of it, then saving the last little dribble and forgetting all about it. I had bottles of bbq sauce and salad dressings that held a mere inch. I try to write the date I open things on the lid with a Sharpie, but more often than not I'm in a hurry and convince myself I'll be able to remember without writing it down. Funny how I'm still optimistic about that. I suppose I just plain forget how forgetful I am.

No matter. I now have a clean slate to work with.

The bad news is that I have a very long grocery list for tomorrow. The good news is that I'm going to label every single thing and never ever forget how old my pickles are. I think. Maybe. If I can remember. :) At the very least, I'll try to remember to shut the fridge door!
