Every parent knows it. The letters V.B.S. secretly stand for "Very Busy Schedule". It happens every year. The spiritual highlight of summer rolls around just as the electric gate breaks, two children need doctor appointments, soccer registration is due, a teenager has mandatory practices every day, and a swarm of tiny black bugs mysteriously appear all over the front door. For some reason, the longer the list gets, the more I seem to find myself saying things like, "Why don't you let me make the snack for V.B.S. tomorrow??" So today, in the midst of chaos, and thanks to the help of my sweet Mother, there was a cupcake bake.
They are sprinkle cupcakes with animal crackers and little umbrellas. They are supposed to look like merry-go-rounds, and I have dozens of them lined up along my kitchen counter. I also decided to make bar cookies for the workers, so I set my two sticks of butter in the microwave, accidentally punched in four minutes instead of forty seconds, and walked away. Very Bad Smell. Very Big meSSSS.
Despite the craziness of this week, I can't help but get swept up in the excitement and renewal of Vacation Bible School. I love the little crafts, the wacky water games, the themed and sugary snack foods, penny offerings in old tin coffee cans, and hymns of praise involving hand motions and hula music. Every year it promises to be a busy week, but I love every beautiful second.
